Dashboard redesign

The previous version of the dashboard posed challenges in terms of usability and efficiency.

The goal was to create a more user-friendly and visually appealing interface to simplify workflows and better meet user needs.

Challenge

The main issue was user complaints about the inconvenient flow for adding new widgets to the dashboard. Users also mentioned that managing the dashboard, rearranging tiles, and customizing its appearance was difficult. Additionally, the information displayed in the widgets was hard to read. During discussions, it also became clear that users lacked filtering options in the widgets and the ability to export data.

Responsibilities

I was responsible for end-to-end design, including research, interaction design, and prototyping.

My work involved analyzing user needs and their behaviour in the app, creating prototypes, and collaborating with dev teams to ensure a seamless user experience.

Redesign process step by step

I conducted a research included an analysis of typical dashboard configurations used by bank employees, who were the most active users of this page.

The main input for this analysis came from user complaints about the outdated design and the inconvenient process of adding new widgets. Users found it difficult to navigate the widget list, as it was unclear which reports were charts and which were tables. Additionally, the dashboard was hard to manage and slowed down their workflows.

It was decided to start by updating the page design and the method of adding new widgets without changing the content of the widgets themselves.

I faced challenge – creating a dynamic grid for the dashboard.
After the research on screen resolutions I defined the main breakpoint for the screens - 1920(hd), it was used the mostly.
I worked on calculating the optimal tile sizes, their dynamic resizing, aspect ratios, and defining the overall parameters of the modular grid.

Then created interactive prototypes for testing new idea of drag&droping widgets on a canvas from side panel.
After testing several prototypes, it became clear that drag-and-drop functionality would negatively impact performance.

I simplified the flow to a single click on an item in the side panel, which became the new method for adding widgets.

I also created interactive prototypes to test tile sizes and add items flow

I also made redesign of the filters functionality and page states, as part of interaction improvement.

After I created the UI guide for the dashboard tiles and made an illustration for the page empty sate as part of redesign journey.

Next, it was time to work on updating the design of the widgets. My task was to analyze competitors and their solutions, select the optimal types of charts for presenting information, and update the styles of data tables.
I mostly explored closest competitors as Monday, Asana and Wrike.

Also I collected the feedback about charts and tables details and what we were able to remove or hide, compared with an old version.

Results

The redesign resolved the key issues we identified during research and testing. The process of adding widgets became much faster and simpler thanks to the side panel, and the new grid system made managing the layout more straightforward. Updating the widget designs, including charts and tables, made the information clearer and easier to work with. Adding filtering and export options addressed user requests and significantly improved how they interacted with the dashboard. Overall, the changes made the dashboard more efficient, user-friendly, and aligned with the needs of the people using it daily.

Even though it was a redesign of part of the app - 2018, 2019, 2020 - Easy Projects has been ranked among Canada's fastest-growing startups three years in a row.
